![]() ![]() When selecting the best Forstner bit set, pay attention to its size to ensure it’ll cover the range of tasks you need it for. While these dissimilarities may be seemingly minor, they can make a big difference to efficiency. However, there are differences in the materials used, and the design of the cutting edges. While available singly, Forstner bits are usually sold as boxed collections of eight or more. Forstner bits are also popular with woodturners, allowing large, deep holes to be cut on a lathe. The latter makes for fast material removal when cutting mortises, particularly when used in a drill press. Unlike a spade or twist drill bit, Forstner bits have no problem cutting at an angle and can drill partial or overlapping holes. These are great for dowel joints, or fitting catches in cabinet doors. Rather than drilling all the way through, a flat bottom hole has smooth sides, a small pilot point in the center, (and the name suggests) a flat bottom. As a result, there is seldom the need to cut deep holes in several stages, as you do with standard twist drill bits.Ī major advantage of a Forstner bit is that it’s made to drill flat bottom holes. It has a central point called a spur that is designed for accurate positioning, sharp cutting teeth, and wings to clear waste. ![]() Some techniques can overcome the problem, but the simple solution for making neat, precise holes is a Forstner drill bit. You could use a spade bit, but they often vibrate or “chatter” and can be difficult to control. Is that what you want? Axminster only have a few specific imperial cutters in their standard range, and most sets I have seen here are metric. While ordinary drill bits are quite efficient, their cutting action can create ragged holes, particularly when working with larger sizes. The Record Power set seems to be imperial, by the way. I couldn't possibly justify buying them at normal prices, but they are sooo good. I bought a Colt set of wood drills when Axminster sold off their stock (when they dropped the brand), and they were a brilliant deal. That all said, if you can get that Festool set for 100 quid, I'd go for it. I bought a diamond disc for it years ago, and that is ideal. The key thing seems to be getting the rim to cut/score really well, like a lip and spur bit I guess, and I can do that with my Proxxon mini drill. I resharpen the larger ones in the cheap set (20mm upwards) with some success, to the extent that I check and fettle them before use if they need it. The smaller one (12mm) is a different pattern to the larger ones, which is very sensible, as in my cheap set they are all the same, just scaled down, and the smaller ones clog terribly. I am slowly replacing the originals in a cheap set, on the basis that the ones I wear out are the ones I need. They are roughly 10-20 quid each, depending on size. I've just bought some standard Axminster ones, having tried them at 22mm in Buffalo board (melamine-faced and impregnated, so very tough on cutters of all sorts).
